Wow..how to go through a year's worth of pictures and pick my "Top 10" when so many of my folders remain unopened. When I think back this year has been one of many challenges and obstacles to overcome and each one of my picks was the result of something I encountered along the way. A landscape and night photographer this year's selections are suprisingly "people" related, something I go to great lengths to exclude and not a subject I feel like I photograph sucessfully but yet they kept reocurring in my photos the entire year.

One Night in Michigan

August 28, 2011 - My conference in Milwaukee Wisconsin ended at noon and the 6 hour mad dash to make it to the Big Sable Lighthouse in Ludington, Michighan began. I watched the sun lowering in the sky as I hit delay after delay, with heavy traffic in Chicago and two lane highways through the small towns along the lake shore. Finding a stretch of open road with 50 miles to go, I floored it as I watched the sun sink further down towards the water. Praying for the sunset to wait for me as I approached the park, another delay at the entrance booth, the ranger directed me to the campground path. Parking in a lot but not knowing which way the path was I quickly headed for the beach with just my camera and my tripod. Asking for directions to the lighthouse, I was told I could go back about 1/2 a mile to the campground path or just follow the beach..it would be about the same distance. With the sun setting I headed to the shoreline. No lighthouse in sight I walked and sometimes ran, hoping I would be able to go the 1.8 miles before the sun sank below the horizon. The sand so heavy in my sandals that they felt like concrete, but the sky was beginning to light up and there in the distance I could see the silhouette of the tower. So tired, I resigned myself to the fact I wasn't going to make it and began taking shots along the shore as I make my way to the lighthouse. Towards the end taking my shoes off and actually wading in the water thigh high as I shot the waves rolling in. Getting to Big Sable just as the sun went below the horizon and twilight was beginning. I took a few shots and started looking for the path from the beach to the lighthouse...suprise there wasn't one. I tried climbing around breakwater unsuccessfully (another story) and decided to climb up one of the big dunes, slipping the whole way up it, my wet jeans now covered in sand, I found the campground trail that would take me back to the parking lot. In complete darkness, only the white sand of the path to lead the way. 2 miles never seemed as long as they did that night and probably won't ever again.

Cemetery Knights 2011 Charleston Rod Run & Doo Wop Haunted House

Cemetery Knights Hearse Club put on a haunted house at the Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop October 6th,7th, and 8th. Along with elaborate props including an electric chair where the occupant jumps out at the audience, club members in costume scared the wits out of those who dared to venture through it. A big thanks to Dave, Mike, and Greg who made this a joy to cover as a photographer. I will never forget the sound of that electric chair starting up! Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial

A Memorial Service of Hope and Healing Honoring the Fallen Upper Big Branch Miners. The photos taken from the top row of the auditorium with a 100-400 zoom at an ISO of 1600. Miners photos were broadcast on a large screen above the stage therfore some of the images were not of the best quality when blown up, but each man was honored and as their name was called family members entered the auditorium and were seated for the service.

The Infrared World

All of these images were taken with an IR converted Canon D60 Digital SLR with only minor adjustments made in brightness and contrast.

Recently infrared images have been unfairly associated with digital manipulation. Infrared actually can be traced back as far as 1910. Its roots lie in the film world and its use became popular during the 1960's with the availibility of Kodak High Speed Infrared film.

In the modern age, digital camera sensors have a filter that blocks infrared light and infrared images can only be taken by using an infrafred converted camera (the IR blocking filter has been removed from the sensor) or by the application of an infrared filter over the lens of the camera. The use of an infrared filter (completely black) creates long shutter speed times and sharp images can only be obtained with the use of a tripod and shutter release. Some older cameras with a "night mode" can shoot infrared images without adaptation or the use of a filter over the lens.

Infrared photography work is considered "Fine Art". Images can have a dramatic high contrast starkness to them or a low contrast dreamy quality. Infrared can bring out tones, textures or highlight a subject in way which color photography can not, but it is not for every subject. Overuse of IR filters (traditional filters and in the "digital darkroom") has created the impression that infrared is a "gimmick" but when true infrared capture is employed it requires skillfull technique (knowledge of the "zone system" is helpful) and pre-visualization in order to select subjects that will be truly enhanced by this medium.

Civil War Weekend, Valley Park in Hurricane West Virginia March 26-28th, 2010. I originally went to take pictures of the dance but ended up down in the camp that night instead. A big thanks to John and his friend who patiently posed by the campfire for me that night and all of the other men in the camp who graciously let me photograph them. A very dedicated group of men who in order to bring history alive waged a battle in the pouring rain the next day.

Cold Morning in Marblehead

It was 6 degrees when I left the car and headed for the lighthouse. Once down on the ledge facing the lighthouse shooting the moon that was behind it strong winds began hitting me from the lake. Shortly afterwards the shutter would click but the pictures stopped appearing on the LCD. Assuming that the LCD had just frozen up I kept shooting away figuring once I warmed the camera up I could see the shots that I had taken. I moved quickly to the other side of the lighthouse as the sun was rising. I tried changing the battery before I began shooting the sunrise but the full batteries in my pocket had lost most of their charge.

As the sun began to rise I shot frame after frame, once and only once a picture flashed up on the LCD... it would be one of only 7 pictures that had saved to the compact flash card this morning.

Monnie had suggested that the compact flash may have froze up instead of the LCD which was definately a possiblity. When I called Canon they also suggested that the processor could have also froze up because the 5D is not meant to be operated in temperatures below zero (which I am sure it was with the wind chill), although other people shoot in extreme weather without any issues...

I need to develop a cover for my 5D with pockets on the inside for hand warmers to keep the camera body warm before I go back next month...
